Weekend Bathroom Refresh
Hi friends, it’s been a minute. Last year, I dropped and shattered my phone. I thought all my images were being backed up in multiple locations, but that was not the case. I have boys’ bathroom updates to post, but I lost all my pictures of my work in their bedroom and study room. That put me in a bit of a funk, and I haven’t done much to update this little corner of the internet. I will try to remedy that situation with a write-up on the quick bathroom refresh I did in the boys’ bathroom last spring. It was nice to work on a smaller project that had a significant impact and was wrapped up in one weekend.
Supplies Needed for the Project:
Since we've moved in, the boys' bathroom has been acceptable. At some point, a previous owner updated the vanity and bathtub but left the absolutely awful mustard and orange-colored floor tile. Enter Rust-Oleum Home Interior Floor Coatingize such a product existed, but thank goodness it does. You can paint over tile to get a new look without spending thousands of dollars to replace it. I purchased the Pearl Gray color to lighten and brighten the room. I started by removing all the old caulk around the bathtub and toilet using this handy tool.
Everything then received a good top to bottom cleaning with Mrs. Meyer’s Multi-Surface Cleaner. The peony is my favorite scent. The floor kit also comes with a special cleaner to make sure any residue is removed from the floors prior to painting.
The base coat went on smoothly. I applied two coats of the base to ensure the original colors were nicely covered, then put on the semi-gloss top coat after the base dried. I sealed everything using GE’s Supreme Silicone Kitchen & Bath Sealant in white.
The floor looked much better, but the Pearl Gray color didn’t look good with the walls. I went to spend time at The Home Depot in the paint department. After bringing home several samples, I chose Meditation Time, a mid-range olive color. Since the bathroom is small, it took no time at all to tape and paint the walls. Ultimately, the new color made the room look much taller.
The bathroom isn’t perfect – the vanity is getting worn, and the room suffers daily abuse from two small boys. Eventually, we will need to do a more extensive renovation. But for now, it’s a relief to walk past and not cringe at the floor. The paint has held up well to dirt, bath spillovers, and a step stool scraping across the finish.
